On 26th June, less than six months since their debut, 8TURN made their first comeback with their second mini album UNCHARTED DRIFT. 8TURN shook up the music scene with the debut of their first mini album, 8TURNRISE, on 30th January with their perfected, strong dance moves and voices that could seemingly reach any note. Their debut title track “TIC TAC” took the hearts of many with its addictive cyber sounding instrumental and energetic lyrics, but it left fans wanting more.

“We’re very thrilled to make our first comeback,” says member Moon Jaeyun.

“We were able to prepare for our second mini album ‘UNCHARTED DRIFT’ with great joy, thanks to all the care, wish, support, and love we’ve received. You’ll see our growth from our first album, so please stay tuned. Also, we ask for your continued support and love for 8TURN!”

8TURN consists of eight members: Moon Jaeyun, Ji Myungho, Yang Minho, Cho Yoonsung, Jung Haemin, Cho Kyungmin, Lee Yungyu, and Lee Seungheon (in order of the leader, followed by oldest to youngest). They are under MNH Entertainment and even used to be known as BOM, Boys of MNH. In their new title track, “EXCEL,” they are seen wanting to break out from their repetitive daily life and the expectations surrounding them by causing some commotion and straying from the crowd.

A TURNING universe

Fans didn’t know what to expect prior to the comeback; members talked about a different sound and how they have grown as a group, but their fanbase, TURNING, are more than pleased. They’ve also now been given a greater look into the world of 8TURN.

Their debut created the narrative of the eight boys waking up to a world filled with familiarity. Continuing this storyline in UNCHARTED DRIFT, time has moved to midsummer, and the members are ready to explore the world they’ve entered, which leads to unpredictable moments that present new adventures and goals.

Their title track “EXCEL” grows their storyline by expanding on a personal belief of the group: taking ownership and responsibility for their actions. They sing about choosing a harder and often longer path towards their goals instead of taking the easy route.

The song was written by Jo Yoonkyung, who was also the writer of “TIC TAC.” He worked alongside Tony Maserati for this track, a renowned producer who has worked with the likes of Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, and a group of girls we all know very well: TWICE.

Navigating 8TURN’s tracklist

The mini album begins with “WORLD”, which was written by 8TURN member Lee Yungyu. The track opens the album with an alternative rock vibe and introduces the listener to the second cinematic universe of 8TURN.

“EXCEL” is featured second on the album leading to their third song “WALK IT OUT” a hip-hop track with infectious dance beats and a fresh sound. It delivers a message of going offline and walking into the world to experience new things.

Their fourth track, “SKETCH,” is also a hip-hop track but with a completely different vibe to “WALK IT OUT”. It talks about the colours of love and is dripping with both the early 2000s and the hyper-cyber sound that 8TURN loves.

The final track, “ING,” has notes of gospel while being filled with optimistic pop sounds and shares the message of spreading smiles and happiness to those who wish to share the long journey that 8TURN want to trek.

With the success of their debut and their powerful first comeback, TURNING are expected to rise in number. Meanwhile, 8TURN will grow and continue to create great music as they “only do big things and X-EXCEL.”
