Perfume-making classes have surged in popularity in Korea, driven by a desire for personalization and self-expression. Many individuals seek to create unique scents that reflect their personalities, tapping into the broader cultural interest in beauty and aesthetics that defines the Korean Wave.

They provide a fun, hands-on experience, perfect for friends, family, or solo enjoyment, making them a popular choice for social activities. As wellness and self-care trends rise, the act of crafting a personalized fragrance is viewed as both therapeutic and relaxing.

Additionally, personalized perfumes serve as thoughtful gifts for special occasions, further enhancing their appeal. So, I had to go and experience it for myself…

Getting personal

Situated in Yeonnam-dong, a personal favorite hangout spot of mine, Greedy Scent offers a unique perfume-making class experience.

Upon arrival, I was warmly welcomed by Jen. She handed me a brochure and a card to guide me through crafting my fragrance.

After being seated, Jen began with a brief introduction and talked us through the brochure. She explained the 36 different scents available and then recommended two from each category (top, middle and base), totalling six scents to create my personalized perfume.

My tip: Be sure to record the number of drops for each scent you choose on your card. If you decide you want to start over, feel free to ask for a new vial.

Once I was happy with my blend, I handed my card to Jen. She used the ratios to calculate the precise amount of each oil needed for my perfume. I then used the scales to measure and mix the oils, transfered the mixture into the provided bottle, and Jen added the final touches to complete my custom fragrance.

To complete the look, I was given a beautifully designed packaging set, which included a box and bag. Don’t forget to keep your personalized card if you wish to return and have your fragrance recreated at a discounted price!

The entire process took around 70 minutes, allowing plenty of time to enjoy each step. With classes available in Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, it’s very foreigner-friendly. I highly recommend booking a class if you want to create a memorable and unique souvenir.
